Live Gamer Awards 06 – Xbox Live Arcade December 31, 2006

Like I’ve been saying all week here are the Live Gamer Awards 2006 starting off with Xbox Live Arcade. The awards are to celebrate the best and worst of gaming in the year 2006. To start off we are going to start with the smaller course of video games with Xbox Live Arcade.

Best Xbox Live Arcade Game – Small Arms

Small Arms with its mix of likeable cast and Super Smash Brothers type gameplay with guns made it a fresh breath for Xbox Live Arcade being one of the first independent and new titles to release that started 4 weeks straight of independent titles. The game featured an excellent multiplayer mode. Retro titles are fun but they are old and orignial new ideas is what Xbox Live Arcade needs and Small Arms fills the spot. This game could even be turned into a full fledged retail game in Small Arms 2 if more modes are added, we’ll see as time goes on.

Runner Up – Assault Heroes

Best Xbox Live Arcade Retro Title – Dig Dug

The retro titles can’t be any of the original titles so there is the best retro title award. Dig Dug stood out among the pack of excellent releases in Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 but doesn’t suffer from the lag and wishes of needing a joystiq to play the game with. It included all the fantastic features of the original arcade classic with upgraded graphics, superb control, leaderboards, and more. The title didn’t leave any complaints that most retro titles caused when modes were taken out because Dig Dug included everything plus extra making it the clear choice for Xbox Live Arcade’s Best Port of 2006.

Worst Xbox Live Arcade Game – Totemball

Totemball showed promise in being the first Xbox Live Vision camera control game, one problem though. It felt like it had no control and you just waved your arms in the air getting tired. While getting tired playing a video game playing Totemball was so bad your arms would be sore and aching. The game had lots of mode but it wasn’t fun and was a flat out awful experience. While the game is free it proved free games can still suck.

Best Xbox Live Arcade Graphics – Roboblitz

This choice is obvious, it is powered by the Unreal Engine 3 and is a technical achievement by all merits and rarely had a messed up texture. Unreal Engine 3 produced amazing graphics in Gears of War and while the game isn’t as good as Gears of War it still looks fantastic especially considering it was squeezed into 50MB.

Best Xbox Live Arcade Game No One Played – Cloning Clyde

During Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays I wasn’t most excited about Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting in the summer. I was excited about Cloning Clyde, when I said that to people most laughed but I was right in the end. Clyde had a wacky sense of humor and was like Mario in its old school sidescrolling ways. It was a beautiful game with its engine and was fun to play. The game had low sales though and was rarely played. The casual crowd would love this game and so would you, to bad no one played it. So go play it and support Ninja Bee whom I am interviewing soon.

Look for more awards for Xbox 360 including Live Gamer’s game of the year, sleeper hits, genre bests, news suprise of the year, and the incredible year that Live Gamer will have for you in 2006 with contests, developer interviews and more.

It’s been a rough few days with many hate e-mails on my Okami screw-ups but now they are people writing back laughing so let’s move on from that. I have an announcement to make. After almost six months running a blog (I think) Live Gamer is going to interview the developer Ninja Bee, the Xbox Live Arcade producers of Outpost Kaloki X, Cloning Clyde, and 2007 Title Bugs of War. If you have any questions you would like to ask please comment or e-mail them to me at dpradio365@gmail.com.

Happy New Year everyone!

PS3s Everywhere and Cousin’s 1000 Doesn’t Hit December 29, 2006

Posted by dpcough in PS3.

Today lots of websites are reporting how PS3s are sitting in stores not being sold with picture evidence from Joystiq that made Digg’s front page. Well I have an experience.

If you are a gamer you know the PS3 is expensive and only has one game on it that is good that the 360 does not in Resitance Fall Of Man but it isn’t worth the price of the PS3, only if you are rich you got a PS3 when it came out. On December 20, 2006 my cousin purchased a PS3 and put it on eBay at the Buy It Now Price of $1,000 and no one bought it as PS3s are selling for as low as $680 now on eBay. So my rich friend who will not be named, I’ll call them the family with 8 BMWs, offered to purchase the PS3 at retail price because they could not find them anywhere. My cousin couldn’t afford the $650 and didn’t want the PS3 because he had a 360 so he shipped it to the family with 8 BMWs at the price of $680 which wasn’t even a profit with shipping and taxes the PS3 cost.

Point is, the PS3 is not selling. My father called me up today when he was at Gamestop returning a broken game asking me if I wanted one because they had just gotten more PS3s and they weren’t selling there so they had more. I happily said no because I have an Xbox 360 and Wii and New Computer so I don’t need one. I’m glad I made the right choice as the PS3 is now crashing and burning, no one wants one and Sony is losing money. The Buy It Now of $1,000 didn’t hit, but Sony’s marketshare has taken a sharp hit and fall.

Xbox Live Not Working December 28, 2006

Posted by dpcough in Uncategorized.

Last night Xbox Live was not working for matchmaking and downloading content off of Xbox Live Marketplace, I didn’t comment because I figured it was my new connection. It is affecting everyone and is being worked on now. Please be patient, you can still communicate with friends though.

UPDATE: Major Nelson has stated Live is up and running again, he doesn’t know what the problem was and will try to get to one of them to interview for his show this week.

Sony Loses 3 More Exclusives December 27, 2006

Posted by dpcough in Xbox/ Xbox 360 General.

UPDATE: Apparently this is not true. Mistranslation, sorry folks – we all make mistakes now and then. I’ll further translate and research a bit better next time.

Sony has been losing a lot of exclusive titles lately and now are losing the PS2 exclusives Okami and Godhand from Capcom according to a recently released document on Capcom’s web site, which can be found here. It is good news for Xbox 360 owners, and Okami will look even better on Xbox 360. Capcom has certainly been showing Xbox 360 a lot of love.

It has also been announced that From Software’s Armored Core 4, which is currently released on the PS3 in Japan, will release on Xbox 360 March 22nd in Japan and will contain many extras. The move was made by From Software so they could make money on the game, as the PS3 does not have enough units to make a good amount of profit on a title. The game’s publisher Sega will bring this game to America by the end of 2007. This is the first Armored Core title to appear on Xbox 360.

Sony you have just lost three more exclusives, I don’t care because I’m a 360 owner so thanks for screwing up!

digg it to show Japan how 360 is better

In a much more quieter release the video game classic Rally-X has been dubbed New Rally-X with enhancements for the Xbox 360. The game costs 400 Microsoft Points. The game’s details according to Major Nelson:

Single Player, HD (High Definition). Collect all the flags while avoiding enemy cars! With new features such as the Lucky Flag, which awards you points depending on your remaining fuel. Collect the Special Flag to double the points of all remaining flags! NEW RALLY-X, the sequel to RALLY-X, was released in 1981. It featured new courses and adjustments to the enemy cars, improving the overall game balance, as well as new graphics and BGM!

Win A Copy of Lost Planet December 26, 2006

Posted by dpcough in Xbox Live.

Deaconblade360 from Unscripted360 is giving away five copies of Lost Planet if you can correctly answer three trivia questions, head over to his blog and check it out and maybe win a free copy (he has 5 that he is giving away) of what will be a fantastic game. Be nice to him though, he might be still in shock about the Dallas Cowboys. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

Philadephia Eagles December 26, 2006

I know this is a gaming blog, while a Live Gamer blog but being a Philadelphia Eagles fan I need to discuss them today. After a slow start to the season, 5-6, the Philadelphia Eagles have taken off and have now beaten Dallas to win four straight under Jeff Garcia. Everyone counted them out off the playoffs at 5-6 when they were crushed by the Colts 45-21, but what happened? How have they gotten so good they can beat the Dallas Cowboys 23-7, Giants 36-22, and Redskins 21-19 – all on the road. They were the first team to ever win three straight division games on the road – in December. What happened to them?

Well Andy Reid started mixing the run with the pass and Jeff Garcia has exceled at quarterback. While Donovan McNabb is a great quarterback I have always though under him we couldn’t win a championship because you didn’t know which McNabb would show up, the McNabb who throws to interceptions to Ronde Barber and vomits, or the McNabb who throws five TDs. With Jeff Garcia we know what we are getting. He is a tough quarterback who doesn’t make the bad mistake and will scramble to get the extra yards if no one is open. His elbow was bleeding and he went back in.

Jeff Garcia doesn’t make the mistake, sure he can only throw the ball twenty yards or less, but he does a fantastic job and keeps the offense on the field so the defense can stay fresh and get rest (something the Eagles did not do under McNabb, the defense played the whole game and looked dead.) Garcia has taken over leadership and given this team life and a home playoff game if, not if WHEN the Eagles win next week most likely against the Giants of the Cowboys in round 1. The home crowd will get behind the team and we will win. From there I don’t know, but this Eagles team has had a lot happen. Now we need to get more out of Garcia. This team clinched a playoff spot and has a good shot to make the Super Bowl, but let’s not get ahead but the Eagles have had a lot happen, and I like the shot this team has. Get out the NFC EAST Champions 2006 out, that 2004 one was getting old.

Still No Pinatas and Arms December 26, 2006

Posted by dpcough in Xbox Live.

Last week Major Nelson wasn’t connected to his computer so he couldn’t post the Top Ten for Xbox Live, he was back at his computer posting away again today after his Christmas with the Xbox Live Top Ten back. After a pretty strong start Small Arms has dipped off significantly not even making the Xbox Live top ten list, it appears as all arcade titles are that way. They do good in their first week of release then everyone moves on to the next title (well other than Novadrome which didn’t make the list.) Viva Pinata has never cracked the top ten though, I don’t know why. It feels like this is Pshyconauts all over, a critcally acclaimed game that no one plays. Hopefully it picks up some steam soon. For the rest here is what rounds out the Top Ten with Gears of War still on top.

Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (UU’s)
1 Gears of War
2 Call Of Duty 3
3 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas
4 Assault Heroes
5 Madden NFL 07
6 Call of Duty 2
7 Oblivion
8 Ghost Recon 3
9 Saints Row
10 Tony Hawk’s Project 8 Demo
